CCD & Youth Faith Formation

CCD News
Fall we prepare for the beginning of our Parish Religious Education Program. Our CCD program is primarily for any child entering Pre-K through 12th grade who is not in a Catholic School; however, all are welcome to attend. Registrations are available online and have been mailed to those families that were registered in the program last year.

Our first gathering is from 9:30 am - 10:30 am on the Sunday following Labor Day
, at St. Joseph Parish Center. This is our opening gathering. Classes begin around mid September and are held from 9:30 am - 10:40 am at St. Raphael Parish Center. See the calendar for more information.

It is important to attend the opening gathering at St. Joseph. We will meet the Catechists, give out information regarding the year and most importantly, pray for our children and our efforts. Let us come together as a community, enjoy each other in fellowship and lift up our needs to God. All are invited to attend the 10:30 am Mass at St. Joseph following the gathering.

Fees for the year remain the same: one child- $40.00, 2 children- $60.00, 3 or more children-$75.00. If you are unable to pay fees, please contact Fr. Caylor, Deacon Norm or Patty Larger so arrangements can be made. If you have any questions, feel free to call Patty Larger or Norm Horstman at 323-7523.

CCD

The parish religious education program meets on Sunday mornings during the school year from 9:30 am - 10:40 am, with dismissal also at 10:15 am for any students attending the St. Joseph 10:30 am Mass. This program is designed for children who are not currently enrolled in a Catholic school, but all are welcome. Classes range from Kindergarten to 12th grade. We have approximately 15-25 students in each class.

Our current curriculum is RCL’s FAITH FIRST which is on the Archdiocesan recommended list. Faith First uses a spiral learning technique and links doctrine to the choices that we are called to make in our lives. Our high school program is well attended and a supportive environment for teens.

The high school curriculum is the Horizons program which is also on the Archdiocesan preferred list. Each grade level has 2 ten week core courses as well as 3 Super Sundays each year. See below for registration and emergency medical forms as well as our calendar and parent guides for each grade level. Faith First also offers an interactive site for families at www.faithfirst.com. You can also connect from this website through our links.

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

DO YOU HAVE OLDER CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION?

CHILDREN’S CATECHUMENATE

This a process of religious instruction for children, which prepares them to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. We are planning our schedule of sessions for this coming year at this time. We will meet once a month, at St. Raphael Hoban Hall on a Tuesdays from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

This program is family centered and parent participation is expected. If your child is beyond the age of reason, 8 years old, and has not yet been baptized or received Holy Communion, the Children’s Catechumenate process will help you on your journey. Our short sessions are enjoyable, interactive and a very worthwhile experience for the whole family.

Melanie Oliver and Patty Larger coordinate this process. You can reach either of us at St. Joseph ~ St. Raphael (937) 323-7523 or Melanie Oliver in the morning at St. Teresa (937) 342-8861.

Feel free to call with any questions.

RECONCILIATION

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is typically received in the second grade prior to reception of the Eucharist. Sacramental Preparation for this sacrament is done during CCD and the Catholic school curriculums. The reception of the sacrament however is always a parish event not a school or CCD event. The entire community is invited to participate in the celebrations.

• Parents of all children receiving this sacrament are asked to attend an initial meeting in the fall.

Important Dates Sacramental Preparation 2008 - 2009

• Shepherd’s Day, our joint Reconciliation retreat day, is scheduled in November from 9:30 am - 2:00 am at St. Joseph Parish Center. At least one adult, preferably a parent is required to attend the retreat with the child. Interactive sessions will focus on the beauty of God’s forgiveness in this sacrament. More information will be given at the initial parent meeting.

• The sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated for these students with the community at our Advent Reconciliation service on Thursday, at 7 pm in St. Raphael Church. All baptismal information will need to be verified prior to this date.

FIRST EUCHARIST
The Eucharist is also typically first received when a child is in the 2nd grade. Sacramental Preparation for this sacrament is done during CCD and the Catholic school curriculums.

These celebrations are also celebrated in the context of a community Mass. For that reason we have 2 Celebrations of First Eucharist, one at each church. This is also done as we could not combine the children and their extended families at one church within a scheduled Sunday Liturgy. St. Raphael’s First Eucharist Celebration is scheduled for the first Sunday in May, at the 11:00 am Mass. St. Joseph First Eucharist celebration will be on the second Sunday in May, 10:30 am Mass.

• As listed above parents are asked to attend the initial meeting in October

• Jesus Day, our Eucharistic retreat day is in early March, from 9:30 am - 2:00 am at St. Joseph Parish Center. At least one adult, preferably a parent is required to attend the retreat with the child. Interactive sessions will focus on the Jesus’ gift to us in the Eucharist. More information will be given at the initial parent meeting.

 • Practices for each group will be held the Saturday prior to the Celebration. A time for these practices will be announced at a later date.

Confirmation

The first opportunity for Sacrament of Confirmation in this area occurs when the candidate is in the 8th grade. Sacramental Preparation for this sacrament is primarily done within the CCD and the Catholic school curriculums.

The reception of the sacrament however is always a parish event not a school or CCD event. The entire community is invited to participate in the celebrations. The Springfield area Catholic community celebrates Confirmation once a year together at the Kuss Auditorium. Candidates from St. Joseph, St. Raphael, St. Teresa, St. Bernard, St. Mary in Urbana, Sacred Heart, St. Parish and St. Michael, Mechanicsburg gather together to receive their final Sacrament of initiation.

In addition to classroom preparation each parish sponsors a retreat for their candidates and service requirements. You will find all of St. Joseph/ St. Raphael information in the form entitled, “Confirmation Particulars”.

St. Joseph / St. Raphael is unique in that we actually begin preparation for Confirmation in the 6th grade. We have a fall meeting that all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade candidates and parents are asked to attend. This meeting informs each grade level of the process that they are involved with each year. It is based on the RCIA process. In the 6th grade we focus on Scripture, and each candidate receives a Catholic Youth Bible. In the 7th grade we focus on the Catechism and the 8th grade is the time for final Spiritual preparation. Candidates are formally enrolled at Sunday Mass in the 8th grade just prior to the beginning of their final preparation.

If you are past the 8th grade and have not been Confirmed we welcome you also. Please call Patty Larger at 323-7523 with any questions.
