PARISH NURSE ARTICLE NEW HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE GUIDELINES In 2003, the National Institute of Health released new, more aggressive high blood pressure guidelines. This change is due to findings that show an increase in stroke and heart disease risk begins at blood pressures as low as 115/75 and doubles with each increase in 20 points systolic (upper number) and 10 points diastolic (lower number). For example if your blood pressure were to increase from 115/75 to 135/85. Your risk of stroke and heart attack would double! Because of this risk, health experts have lowered the acceptable normal range of blood pressure to promote more aggressive and earlier treatment of high blood pressure. What does this mean for millions of people whose blood pressure a was considered borderline high or even normal? These new guidelines now place them in "prehypertension" range and lifestyle modifications are recommended to lower blood pressure readings. Lifestyle modifications include losing excess weight, exercising, limiting alcohol, following a heart-healthy diet, cutting back on salt, and quitting smoking. Individuals with blood pressure 140/90 or higher will need medication along with the above changes to reduce their risk of stroke and heart disease. See the table below to determine your blood pressure status. Consult your parish nurse or healthcare provider for information to help you lower your stroke and heart disease risk. NEW CLASSIFICATION (2003) High 140/90 or above Pre hypertension 120/80 to 139/89 Normal 119/79 PREVIOUS CLASSIFICATION (1997) High 140/90 or above Borderline 130/85 to 139/89 Normal 129/84 or below Submitted by: Sue Papp, R.N.
